At which Olympics did men's ice hockey first appear?

Men's ice hockey first appeared at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium.

The tournament ran from April 23 to April 29, 1920, and was the first Olympic ice hockey competition. Seven nations entered, with Canada represented by the Winnipeg Falcons. Canada won gold, the United States took silver and Czechoslovakia earned bronze.

The event used Canadian rules and a format known as the Bergvall system, which created separate rounds to determine gold, silver and bronze. Games were played with seven skaters per side, including a rover, and substitutions were not permitted. The rink was smaller than modern North American rinks, and forward passing was prohibited.

The tournament also served as the first Ice Hockey World Championship. Hockey moved to the inaugural Winter Olympics at Chamonix in 1924 and has remained part of the Winter program since then. That is why 1924 Winter Olympics is a tempting but incorrect answer: it was the first Winter Olympic appearance, not the first Olympic appearance overall. The women's Olympic tournament did not debut until 1998.
