The NHL award honoring sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct is the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy.

The award is presented to the player judged to combine exemplary conduct with a high standard of playing ability. It was donated to the NHL in 1924–25 by Lady Byng of Vimy, an avid hockey fan and the wife of Viscount Byng, then Governor General of Canada. Frank Nighbor of the original Ottawa Senators became the first winner.

The trophy is not simply a prize for the player with the fewest penalty minutes. Voters consider sportsmanship, conduct and skill together, and members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association rank their top five candidates. The first-place vote is worth 10 points, followed by 7, 5, 3 and 1.

Frank Boucher won the award seven times in eight years, prompting Lady Byng to give him the original trophy. A replacement was donated in 1935–36, and after Lady Byng's death in 1949, the NHL adopted the memorial name. The award is distinct from the King Clancy Trophy, which recognizes leadership and community service.
