Who is the creator and executive producer of the Gran Turismo series?
Answer
Kazunori Yamauchi
Answer
Kazunori Yamauchi
Kazunori Yamauchi is the creator and executive producer of the Gran Turismo series.
Yamauchi began developing the original game in 1992 while working at Sony Computer Entertainment Japan. He and a small team pursued a realistic driving simulator at a time when most console racing games emphasized arcade-style action.
The first Gran Turismo took about five years to complete and launched in Japan for the original PlayStation in 1997. Its detailed car physics, licensed vehicles, tuning system, and driving tests helped establish the series as a landmark racing simulator. Yamauchi later became president and CEO of Polyphony Digital, the studio behind the franchise.
A common mix-up is confusing Yamauchi with Shuhei Yoshida, who produced the original 1997 game for Sony. Yoshida was an important early executive, but Yamauchi is the series’ defining creator and long-term producer. Yamauchi is also a racing driver and has helped shape collaborations between Polyphony Digital and real-world automakers.
