Who is the central scholar and space traveler in C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy?
Answer
Elwin Ransom
Answer
Elwin Ransom
Elwin Ransom is the central scholar and space traveler in C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy. He is the protagonist of Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength.
Ransom begins the trilogy as a Cambridge philologist. In Out of the Silent Planet, he is abducted and taken to Mars, called Malacandra by its inhabitants. The later novels place him in increasingly cosmic and theological conflicts involving Earth, other worlds, and spiritual powers.
Lewis modeled aspects of Ransom on his friend J.R.R. Tolkien, including the character’s academic background and initials. Ransom is not the narrator of every section of the trilogy, but he remains its unifying central figure.
The books are sometimes grouped under different labels, including the Cosmic Trilogy and the Ransom Trilogy. They are separate from Lewis’s Narnia books and were written for an adult audience interested in science fiction, theology, and moral philosophy.
