Who is the central rebel leader in Leo Tolstoy’s novella Hadji Murat?
Answer
Hadji Murat
Answer
Hadji Murat
The central rebel leader in Leo Tolstoy’s novella Hadji Murat is Hadji Murat.
Hadji Murat was a real Avar military commander from the Caucasus. He fought against Russian expansion but later broke with Imam Shamil, the major leader of the resistance in Chechnya and Dagestan. Seeking protection and an alliance, Hadji Murat surrendered to Russian forces in 1851.
Tolstoy’s novella, written late in his life and published after his death, presents the warrior as courageous, politically trapped, and shaped by competing loyalties. The story draws on the historical Caucasus War, but Tolstoy transforms the events into a meditation on power, honor, violence, and survival.
Imam Shamil is an important neighboring figure, but he is not the novella’s central character. The title itself names the protagonist, a useful distinction because historical accounts often discuss both men together.
