Which actor played Pierre Bezukhov in the 1966 Soviet film War and Peace?

The story behind the answer

Sergei Bondarchuk played Pierre Bezukhov in the 1966–1967 Soviet film War and Peace.

Bondarchuk directed the four-part epic and also played Pierre, one of Tolstoy’s central characters. The production was made by Mosfilm and released in four installments between 1966 and 1967. It adapted the main narrative of Tolstoy’s novel, including the Napoleonic invasion of Russia and the Battle of Borodino.

Vyacheslav Tikhonov played Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, while Lyudmila Savelyeva portrayed Natasha Rostova. Those roles are a common source of confusion because all three characters are central to the story and appear together across much of the film.

The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 1969 ceremony. Its large-scale battle scenes, extensive extras, and use of Soviet military resources made it one of the most ambitious screen adaptations of Tolstoy’s novel.
