Who is Spider-Man's main love interest?

The story behind the answer

Spider-Man’s main love interest is Mary Jane Watson. She is Peter Parker’s best-known romantic partner and one of the central characters in his supporting cast.

Mary Jane was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, but her first full appearance came in The Amazing Spider-Man #42 in 1966, written by Lee and drawn by John Romita Sr. Earlier stories teased her identity, building anticipation around Peter’s mysterious neighbor.

Gwen Stacy was also a major love interest, especially during the late 1960s and early 1970s, so readers sometimes debate which relationship was more important at a particular point in the comics. Even so, Mary Jane became the franchise’s most enduring romantic counterpart. In many adaptations, including the 2002 film, she is portrayed as Peter’s central love interest.
