Which actor played Flint Marko, also known as Sandman, in the 2007 film Spider-Man 3?

The story behind the answer

Thomas Haden Church played Flint Marko, also known as Sandman, in the 2007 film Spider-Man 3.

Church’s character begins as an escaped convict whose attempts to evade police lead him into a particle accelerator. The accident fuses his body with sand, giving him the ability to reshape himself, grow to enormous size, and withstand attacks that would injure an ordinary human.

Flint Marko is not simply a conventional supervillain. His actions are driven partly by his desire to support his sick daughter, although his criminal choices bring him into conflict with Peter Parker. The film eventually reveals that Marko’s role in Uncle Ben’s death was more complicated than Peter had believed.

Church was known for dramatic and comedic work before taking the role, including his acclaimed performance in Sideways. Spider-Man 3 also featured James Franco as Harry Osborn, Dylan Baker as Curt Connors, and Topher Grace as Eddie Brock, which makes the cast especially easy to mix up.
