Who is Cardenio's beloved in Don Quixote?

The story behind the answer

Who is Cardenio’s beloved in Don Quixote? Cardenio’s beloved is Luscinda.

Cardenio and Luscinda are at the center of one of the major interwoven love stories in Part One of Don Quixote. Cardenio describes himself as deeply devoted to Luscinda, with their relationship threatened by family decisions, social rank, and the interference of Don Fernando.

Fernando first becomes involved with Dorotea, but later desires Luscinda and persuades her father to accept him as a husband. Cardenio is separated from Luscinda and eventually driven into despair and apparent madness in the Sierra Morena. Luscinda, meanwhile, remains emotionally committed to Cardenio despite the pressure placed on her.

Their story is eventually brought together with Dorotea’s. The four characters meet again at the inn, where hidden identities and broken promises are revealed. Luscinda is not Cardenio’s sister or a passing acquaintance; she is the woman he loves, and her relationship with him forms the emotional core of the Cardenio episode.
