Which Madrid printer produced the first edition of Don Quixote Part One?

The story behind the answer

Juan de la Cuesta produced the first edition of Don Quixote Part One as its Madrid printer.

Cuesta managed a printing shop on Calle Atocha in Madrid, where Cervantes’s work was printed in 1604 for release in early 1605. The title page of the first edition identifies the Madrid printing context associated with his shop.

This question is easy to confuse with Francisco de Robles, who was the publisher-bookseller. Robles acquired the rights and commissioned Cuesta to print the book; Cuesta handled the presswork and production of the physical edition. Thus both names belong to the publication story, but only Cuesta was the printer.

The first edition contained many typographical errors, a reminder of the speed and limitations of early-modern printing. Cuesta later became known for printing other works by Cervantes, including the Novelas ejemplares in 1613. His former shop at Atocha 87 has since been restored as a Cervantes-related cultural site.
