Who invented the waffle-pattern sole that inspired Nike’s early running shoes?

The story behind the answer

Bill Bowerman invented the waffle-pattern sole that inspired Nike’s early running shoes.

Bowerman was a University of Oregon track coach and a co-founder of Nike, originally called Blue Ribbon Sports. In the early 1970s, he experimented with a kitchen waffle iron to create a lightweight outsole with raised traction patterns. The rubber compound and molding process produced the famous waffle sole.

The idea led to the Nike Waffle Racer and related early models. The sole provided grip while helping reduce weight, important qualities for competitive runners. Bowerman’s experimentation is one of the most frequently repeated origin stories in sneaker history, although the process involved more than simply pouring rubber into a household waffle iron.

Phil Knight co-founded Blue Ribbon Sports with Bowerman but did not invent the waffle sole. Geoff Hollister was another early Nike figure, while Tinker Hatfield became a leading Nike designer years later. The waffle sole helped establish Nike’s identity in running before the company expanded into basketball and lifestyle footwear.
