Pauline Baynes illustrated the original English editions of most books in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia.
Baynes created the black-and-white illustrations and maps that became closely associated with the Narnia books. Her artwork helped establish visual details for places, creatures, clothing, and scenes in the series, making her contribution important to the books’ original presentation rather than merely decorative.
Lewis recommended Baynes to his publisher after seeing her work. She illustrated all seven Narnia books, although The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was the first to appear. Baynes also illustrated works by J.R.R. Tolkien, including early editions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Arthur Rackham, E.H. Shepard, and John Tenniel are famous illustrators of other classic English-language books, which is why they can seem plausible here. Rackham illustrated fairy tales and mythology, Shepard illustrated Winnie-the-Pooh, and Tenniel illustrated Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
