Who illustrated the original editions of all seven books in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia?

The story behind the answer

Pauline Baynes illustrated the original editions of all seven books in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia.

Baynes was an English illustrator whose work became closely associated with children’s literature and fantasy. Lewis selected her to illustrate The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and she went on to provide illustrations for the complete seven-book Narnia series.

Her artwork included interior illustrations, maps, and cover designs, helping establish the visual identity many readers associate with Narnia. The books’ creatures, landscapes, and characters were presented through a style that was detailed but accessible to younger readers.

Baynes also illustrated works by J.R.R. Tolkien, which sometimes causes confusion about her connection with Lewis and Tolkien. She did not create the Narnia stories; Lewis wrote them. Nor was she the illustrator of the Harry Potter books or the original Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland illustrations.
