Who illustrated many of Roald Dahl’s best-known books, including Matilda and The BFG?

The story behind the answer

Quentin Blake illustrated many of Roald Dahl’s best-known books, including Matilda and The BFG.

Blake’s loose, energetic pen-and-ink drawings became strongly associated with Dahl’s writing. His illustrations often exaggerate movement, facial expressions, and comic ugliness, complementing Dahl’s vivid characters and mischievous tone.

Their collaboration covered numerous titles, including The Twits, The Witches, George’s Marvellous Medicine, and The Enormous Crocodile. Blake did not illustrate every Dahl book: Joseph Schindelman illustrated the first edition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, for example.

Blake was born in 1932 and became an important British illustrator in his own right. He also illustrated books by many other authors and served as the first Children’s Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1999 to 2001.
