Who holds the NHL record for most career shutouts?
Answer
Martin Brodeur
Answer
Martin Brodeur
Martin Brodeur holds the NHL record for most career regular-season shutouts, with 125. The New Jersey Devils goaltender accumulated that total during a 22-season career that ended in 2015.
Brodeur played 1,266 regular-season games, almost all of them with New Jersey, and also owns the NHL records for career wins, games played by a goaltender, and minutes played. His shutout record reflects both durability and consistency: he routinely appeared in more than 70 games during a season while serving as the Devils’ long-term starter.
Brodeur’s defensive environment helped, too. New Jersey became known for disciplined team defense, particularly during the “neutral-zone trap” era, but the goaltender still had to deliver the saves and remain effective across more than two decades. He recorded 691 regular-season victories and a 2.24 career goals-against average.
The record is sometimes confused with playoff shutouts or single-season shutouts. Brodeur also holds the NHL playoff career shutout record, with 24, and helped the Devils win Stanley Cups in 1995, 2000, and 2003.
