Which NHL team won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992?
Answer
Pittsburgh Penguins
Answer
Pittsburgh Penguins
The Pittsburgh Penguins won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992.
Pittsburgh defeated the Minnesota North Stars in the 1991 Stanley Cup Final, winning the series 4–2. Led by captain Mario Lemieux, the Penguins captured the franchise’s first championship and established themselves as the NHL’s dominant team.
The Penguins repeated in 1992 by sweeping the Chicago Blackhawks in four games. Lemieux won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in both seasons, becoming only the second player to win the award in consecutive years at that time. Coaching also changed between the championships: Bob Johnson guided the 1991 team, while Scotty Bowman coached the repeat winner.
The Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche are common mix-ups because each became a major Stanley Cup contender in the 1990s or early 2000s. Pittsburgh’s next championship did not arrive until 2009.
