Who hit a golf ball on the Moon during the Apollo 14 mission? Alan Shepard hit golf balls on the Moon during Apollo 14.
Shepard was the mission commander and made the swings near the end of Apollo 14’s second lunar surface expedition on February 6, 1971. He used a makeshift club: a modified Wilson six-iron head attached to the handle of a lunar-sample collection tool. Space limitations and his bulky suit meant he swung one-handed.
Shepard struck two golf balls while fellow astronaut Edgar Mitchell watched. The stunt was arranged discreetly and shown during a television broadcast from the lunar surface. Shepard later joked that one ball went “miles and miles,” although later image analysis suggested the shots traveled only a few dozen yards.
The feat is often mixed up with Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, but neither played golf on the Moon. Shepard was also the first American in space, flying the 1961 Freedom 7 mission, before becoming the fifth person to walk on the Moon.
