Who has presented the BBC business-investment programme Dragons' Den since its first episode?

The story behind the answer

Evan Davis has presented the BBC business-investment programme Dragons' Den since its first episode.

Davis is a British journalist, economist and broadcaster. Before becoming associated with Dragons' Den, he was best known for his work at the BBC, including presenting the economics programme Evanomics and serving as the BBC's economics editor. He later became a presenter of the current-affairs programme Newsnight.

Dragons' Den is based on the Japanese format Money Tigers and gives entrepreneurs the chance to present businesses to wealthy investors. Davis acts as the studio presenter and interviewer, while the dragons question contestants about sales, valuations and proposed deals. The investors, rather than the presenter, decide whether to make offers.

A common mix-up is confusing Davis with the show's investors. He is not a dragon and does not normally invest his own money in the businesses presented. His role is to introduce the pitches and provide linking commentary around the negotiations.
