Who gave McDonald’s Big Mac its name in 1967?

The story behind the answer

Esther Glickstein Rose gave McDonald’s Big Mac its name in 1967.

Rose was a 21-year-old advertising secretary working at McDonald’s corporate headquarters when she suggested “Big Mac” during a naming discussion. The name was selected for the company’s new large hamburger, which had been developed by franchisee Jim Delligatti.

The sandwich debuted in the United States in 1967 and became a national menu item the following year. Its name helped distinguish it from McDonald’s smaller hamburgers and became one of the company’s most recognizable product brands.

The credit is often mistakenly given to Delligatti because he created the sandwich, or to Kroc because he led McDonald’s during its expansion. Delligatti invented the product; Rose supplied the name that became famous.
