Who founded the tequila brand Sauza?

The story behind the answer

Cenobio Sauza founded the Sauza tequila brand. He acquired the La Perseverancia distillery in Tequila, Jalisco, and developed the business into one of Mexico’s best-known tequila producers.

Sauza’s history is closely connected with the growth of industrial tequila production in the nineteenth century. The company expanded production and helped establish tequila as a widely marketed Mexican spirit. Its brands later became internationally recognizable.

Cenobio Sauza is sometimes confused with José Cuervo, whose family company represents a separate and older tequila-producing lineage. Don Julio González is also associated with a different major tequila brand. These names all belong to tequila history, but they are not interchangeable founders.

The Sauza name remains attached to tequila products today, although ownership and corporate structures have changed over time. The historical founder’s full name is the clearest answer to questions about the brand’s origin.
