What does the NOM number on a tequila label identify?

The story behind the answer

The NOM number on a tequila label identifies the authorized producer or distillery. NOM stands for Norma Oficial Mexicana, Mexico’s official standard system, and the number connects the bottle to the certified producer listed under tequila regulations.

This identification helps regulators and consumers trace who manufactured the tequila. It is not a vintage date, an indication of how long the spirit was aged, or a numerical quality score.

Tequila labels may also display information such as the category, whether the spirit is 100% agave or tequila made with additional permitted sugars, the alcohol percentage, and the lot or batch details. These markings serve different purposes from the NOM.

The Consejo Regulador del Tequila verifies compliance with Mexico’s tequila standard. Because multiple brands can use the same authorized distillery, a brand name and a NOM number do not always refer to the same thing.
