Who founded the Swiss watch company Breguet?
Answer
Abraham-Louis Breguet
Answer
Abraham-Louis Breguet
Abraham-Louis Breguet founded the Swiss watch company Breguet.
Born in Neuchâtel in 1747, Abraham-Louis Breguet established his watchmaking business in Paris in 1775. He became one of the most influential horologists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, serving aristocratic and royal clients across Europe.
Breguet is associated with important developments including the tourbillon, patented in 1801, and distinctive design details such as Breguet hands, Arabic numerals and guilloché dials. His work influenced both the technology and visual language of high-end mechanical watches.
The modern brand carries his name, but the founder’s personal career predates the company’s later Swiss corporate history. This is why Breguet is best identified by its founder rather than by a modern executive or later owner.
