Who founded the Lamborghini automobile company?

The story behind the answer

Ferruccio Lamborghini founded the Lamborghini automobile company. He established Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini in 1963 in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy, intending to build refined grand touring cars that could compete with established marques such as Ferrari.

Lamborghini was already a successful industrialist before entering the sports-car business. In 1948, he founded Lamborghini Trattori, which manufactured tractors using his mechanical expertise and helped fuel his fortune during Italy’s postwar economic growth. He later operated businesses producing heating, air-conditioning, and hydraulic equipment.

The company’s first production car was the 350 GT, introduced in the mid-1960s. Lamborghini gained worldwide attention with the Miura, unveiled in 1966. Its rear mid-engine layout helped establish a design formula that became influential among high-performance road cars.

A common mix-up is Enzo Ferrari, who founded Ferrari. Popular stories often portray Lamborghini’s decision as beginning with a dispute over Ferrari road cars, but the broader historical fact is that Ferruccio used his manufacturing success and engineering ambitions to create a rival Italian marque.
