Aguri Suzuki gave Lamborghini’s V12 its best Formula One finish, third at the 1990 Japanese Grand Prix.
Driving a Lola LC90 entered by the Larrousse team, Suzuki finished third at Suzuka on 21 October 1990. Nelson Piquet won for Benetton-Ford, Roberto Moreno finished second, and Suzuki completed the podium after a 53-lap race. The result was also Suzuki’s first Formula One podium and the first podium by a Japanese driver in Formula One.
For Lamborghini, the achievement was especially significant because the V12 had struggled with reliability during its Formula One career. The engine made its debut in 1989 and powered several teams, including Larrousse, Lotus, Ligier, Modena and Minardi, but it never won a race or took pole position.
The 1990 Japanese Grand Prix remained the Lamborghini V12’s only F1 podium. Ayrton Senna, Michele Alboreto and Philippe Alliot are associated with the engine’s F1 story, but none produced the result stated in this question.
