Who founded Stone Island, the Italian clothing brand known for garment-dyed outerwear, in 1982?

The story behind the answer

Massimo Osti founded Stone Island in 1982.

Osti created Stone Island as a separate line connected to the Italian company C.P. Company. The label became famous for experimental fabrics, practical outerwear, and extensive garment-dyeing techniques. Its compass badge became one of the most recognizable symbols in contemporary menswear and streetwear.

Although Stone Island is often discussed alongside luxury fashion, its design language came from military clothing, workwear, and technical research. The brand developed unusual textiles and treatments that changed the look and performance of jackets, overshirts, and knitwear.

Carlo Rivetti later became a major owner and executive associated with the company, which is why he is sometimes incorrectly named as its founder. The original creative founder, however, was Massimo Osti, who also shaped C.P. Company’s early identity.
