Companion is KAWS’s recurring cartoon character used in streetwear collaborations.
KAWS, the professional name of American artist Brian Donnelly, introduced Companion as a stylized figure with an oversized skull-like head, gloved hands and the artist’s signature crossed-out eyes. The character became one of the central images in his paintings, sculptures, toys and commercial projects.
Companion has appeared in multiple poses and materials, including vinyl figures and monumental sculptures. KAWS has also created other recurring characters, such as Chum and BFF, which is why those names can be mistaken for the answer.
The character’s popularity helped connect contemporary art, collectible toys and streetwear. KAWS’s collaborations have included fashion, footwear and sportswear companies, but Companion remains an art character rather than a brand mascot belonging to one clothing label.
