The Undertaker faced Shawn Michaels in the first Hell in a Cell match at Badd Blood: In Your House in 1997.
The match took place on October 5, 1997, at the Kiel Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The large steel structure surrounded the ring and the ringside area, creating a match format designed to prevent outside interference.
Shawn Michaels won after Kane made his debut and interfered. Kane tore open the cell door, entered the match and performed his signature tombstone piledriver on The Undertaker, allowing Michaels to score the pinfall.
Hell in a Cell later became one of WWE’s best-known match types and was used for major rivalries involving performers such as Mick Foley, Triple H and Brock Lesnar. The first match is also notable because it introduced Kane to WWE’s audience in a dramatic setting.
