Christopher Tolkien edited and published many of J.R.R. Tolkien’s posthumous works.

After his father’s death in 1973, Christopher organized a vast collection of manuscripts, notes, drafts, maps, and linguistic material. He used these sources to prepare The Silmarillion, which appeared in 1977, and later edited additional books from Tolkien’s papers.

Christopher’s editorial work made texts available that were often unfinished or existed in multiple versions. He selected, arranged, and sometimes connected materials so that readers could follow the history of Tolkien’s invented world. His introductions and notes also explained the differences between drafts and the development of names, stories, and languages.

Among the later publications were Unfinished Tales, The History of Middle-earth, and The Children of Húrin. Christopher was not merely a publisher; he was the principal scholarly editor of his father’s literary legacy for several decades.
