Who edited and organized J.R.R. Tolkien’s unfinished mythology for the 1977 publication of The Silmarillion?
Answer
Christopher Tolkien
Answer
Christopher Tolkien
Christopher Tolkien edited and organized J.R.R. Tolkien’s unfinished mythology for the 1977 publication of The Silmarillion.
Christopher Tolkien, Tolkien’s third son, inherited a vast collection of manuscripts after his father died in 1973. These papers contained multiple versions, revisions, notes, poems, and incomplete narratives covering the history of Arda from its creation through the First Age and beyond.
Because J.R.R. Tolkien had not prepared a final, unified manuscript, Christopher had to compare and arrange materials to create a publishable volume. The result, published in 1977, presents the creation of the world, the Valar, the Elves, the Silmarils, and major tragedies such as the stories of Beren and Lúthien and Túrin Turambar.
The Silmarillion is therefore not a straightforward novel completed by Tolkien in his lifetime. It is an editorial construction based on his writings. Later volumes of The History of Middle-earth documented many of the underlying drafts and showed how extensively Tolkien’s ideas changed over time.
