Who donated the original Stanley Cup in 1892?
Answer
Lord Stanley of Preston
Answer
Lord Stanley of Preston
Lord Stanley of Preston donated the original Stanley Cup in 1892.
Lord Stanley, then governor general of Canada, purchased a silver bowl and offered it as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. He wanted a visible prize for Canada’s top-ranking amateur hockey team. The trophy was commissioned in 1892 and first awarded in 1893 to the Montreal Hockey Club.
His sons Arthur and Algernon helped inspire the donation because the Stanley family played and promoted hockey. Lord Stanley’s original plan was for the cup to pass from champion to champion, with teams meeting under recognized rules to establish the winner.
The trophy later became the championship award of the National Hockey League. A common mix-up is confusing its donor with later hockey administrators such as Clarence Campbell, or with team executives such as Conn Smythe. The original silver bowl is not exactly the same physical trophy presented today: authenticated and replica versions now support the Cup’s display and presentation roles.
