Who does Darth Maul kill at the end of Episode I: The Phantom Menace?

Darth Maul kills Qui-Gon Jinn at the end of Episode I: The Phantom Menace. During the Battle of Naboo, the Sith apprentice fatally wounds the Jedi Master with a lightsaber in the Theed power generator complex.

Qui-Gon is separated from Obi-Wan Kenobi by a series of energy barriers and faces Maul alone. Although the wound is mortal, Qui-Gon remains conscious long enough to ask Obi-Wan to train Anakin Skywalker before dying in his apprentice’s arms.

Obi-Wan then defeats Maul by using the Force to leap from a shaft and cut the Sith warrior in half. This is why viewers sometimes remember Maul as the final victim of the duel, but Obi-Wan—not Qui-Gon—kills Maul. Maul’s apparent death is later overturned in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, when he is revealed to have survived.
