Who directed the 2016 Assassin’s Creed film starring Michael Fassbender?

The story behind the answer

Justin Kurzel directed the 2016 Assassin’s Creed film starring Michael Fassbender.

The film was written by Michael Lesslie, Adam Cooper, and Bill Collage, with Fassbender serving as a producer as well as playing the lead roles. Its contemporary protagonist is Callum Lynch, while Fassbender also portrays Aguilar de Nerha, Callum’s ancestor in fifteenth-century Spain.

Kurzel had previously directed Fassbender in Macbeth, released in 2015. That collaboration helped bring a darker, serious visual style to the adaptation. The film uses the Animus to connect Callum’s present-day experience with Aguilar’s historical missions.

The movie is not a direct retelling of one particular game’s campaign. Instead, it introduces an original story and characters within the franchise’s mythology, including the conflict between Assassins and Templars. This is why the film’s plot does not simply reproduce Altaïr’s or Ezio’s storyline.
