Who directed the 1986 Vietnam War film Platoon?

The story behind the answer

Oliver Stone directed the 1986 Vietnam War film Platoon.

Stone drew on his own experience as a U.S. Army infantryman in Vietnam, making the film notably personal among major Vietnam War dramas. He wrote the screenplay before his directing career became established, and the project was eventually produced after years of difficulty finding financing.

Platoon follows young American soldiers during the conflict and focuses on the moral divisions within their unit. Willem Dafoe, Tom Berenger, and Charlie Sheen played major roles, while the story was partly shaped by Stone’s memories of combat and military life.

The film is sometimes confused with Apocalypse Now or Full Metal Jacket because all three are prominent Vietnam War movies. However, Francis Ford Coppola directed Apocalypse Now, Stanley Kubrick directed Full Metal Jacket, and Stone directed Platoon. Platoon won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 59th ceremony.
