Who directed the 1966–1967 Soviet film adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace?

The story behind the answer

Sergei Bondarchuk directed the 1966–1967 Soviet film adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. He also played Pierre Bezukhov, one of the story’s central characters.

The production was made as a four-part film series by Mosfilm. Its large-scale battle scenes, elaborate costumes, and extensive cast were intended to match the size and historical sweep of Tolstoy’s novel. The films cover the major plotlines involving Pierre, Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, Natasha Rostova, and the Napoleonic Wars.

Bondarchuk’s adaptation won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for 1968. It became one of the best-known screen versions of Tolstoy’s epic and is frequently distinguished from the 1956 American film directed by King Vidor.

The Soviet production’s title is commonly given as War and Peace, with individual installments sometimes listed separately. Bondarchuk’s dual role as director and actor is an especially notable feature of the adaptation.
