Who directed Super Metroid for the Super Nintendo?

The story behind the answer

Yoshio Sakamoto directed Super Metroid for the Super Nintendo.

Sakamoto was a key figure in the Metroid series from its earliest days: he worked as a character designer on the original game before taking a larger creative role in later entries. For Super Metroid, he served as director and writer, helping shape its atmosphere, exploration, and narrative presentation.

Super Metroid was developed by Nintendo R&D1 with programming support from Intelligent Systems. The project began after Metroid II: Return of Samus, and Nintendo spent roughly two years developing the SNES sequel after approving the concept. Sakamoto’s team expanded the series with a larger world, an automap, more expressive environments, and the ability to fire in multiple directions while moving.

Players sometimes confuse Sakamoto with Gunpei Yokoi, who managed Nintendo R&D1 and produced earlier Metroid games, or with Shigeru Miyamoto, who was associated with other major Nintendo franchises. Satoru Iwata was not Super Metroid’s director. The game launched in Japan in March 1994 and became one of the most influential exploration-focused action games on the SNES.
