Who directed Pixar’s 2017 film Coco?

Lee Unkrich directed Pixar’s 2017 film Coco.

Unkrich had already directed Toy Story 3, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Coco became his second solo feature as a director and was co-directed by Adrian Molina, who also helped write the screenplay. The film follows Miguel Rivera, a young boy who dreams of becoming a musician despite his family’s ban on music.

Coco grew out of Pixar’s interest in Mexican culture, family memory, and the Día de los Muertos holiday. Unkrich and the creative team researched Mexican traditions and visited communities in Mexico while developing the setting, characters, and visual style.

A common mix-up is crediting Molina as the sole director. Molina was an important writer and co-director, but the film’s director credit belongs to Lee Unkrich. Coco was released in 2017 and became one of Pixar’s most acclaimed films.
