What is Mamá Coco’s daughter called in Pixar’s Coco?

The story behind the answer

Mamá Coco’s daughter in Pixar’s Coco is Elena Rivera, better known as Abuelita.

Elena is Miguel’s paternal grandmother and the daughter of Coco. She strongly enforces the Rivera family’s ban on music, believing that music caused suffering for earlier generations. Her strictness reflects inherited family trauma rather than simple dislike of Miguel.

In the Spanish-language version and in family usage, Elena is commonly called Abuelita, meaning grandmother. That nickname can make her identity less obvious to viewers who remember the character primarily through dialogue.

Elena should not be confused with Mamá Imelda, the founder of the family’s shoemaking tradition, or with Coco herself. Elena is one generation below Coco and one generation above Miguel’s father, Enrique.
