Who directed E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, released in 1982?

The story behind the answer

Steven Spielberg directed E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, released in 1982.

The science-fiction film follows Elliott, a lonely boy who discovers an extraterrestrial stranded on Earth. Elliott and his siblings hide the visitor and help him communicate with his home world while government agents search for him.

Spielberg directed the film from a screenplay by Melissa Mathison. Henry Thomas played Elliott, while Dee Wallace played his mother and Drew Barrymore played his younger sister, Gertie. The creature known as E.T. was created through practical effects and puppetry rather than a computer-generated performance.

E.T. became a major commercial and cultural success. It received nine Academy Award nominations and won four, including awards for its visual effects, original score, sound effects editing and sound. John Williams composed the celebrated music, including the theme accompanying the bicycle flight sequence.
