In Back to the Future, what year does Marty McFly travel back to when he first uses the DeLorean time machine?

The story behind the answer

In Back to the Future, Marty McFly travels back to 1955 when he first uses the DeLorean time machine.

The time machine, built by eccentric inventor Emmett “Doc” Brown, reaches its first temporal destination after the DeLorean hits 88 miles per hour at Twin Pines Mall. Marty arrives in 1955, thirty years before his own era of 1985, and accidentally interferes with the first meeting of his future parents, George and Lorraine McFly.

Marty must persuade the teenage George to stand up to bully Biff Tannen while also ensuring that George and Lorraine fall in love. The film’s central comic tension comes from Marty encountering his parents as teenagers and risking his own existence by changing their history.

The year is sometimes confused with 1985, the film’s present-day setting, or with 2015, the future date visited in Back to the Future Part II. The original film was released in 1985 and was directed by Robert Zemeckis.
