In The Shining, the Torrance family stays at the isolated Overlook Hotel.
Jack Torrance accepts a winter caretaker job at the hotel and brings his wife Wendy and son Danny to the remote location. Heavy snow eventually cuts the family off from the outside world, allowing the hotel’s supernatural history and Jack’s deteriorating behavior to dominate the story.
The Overlook is fictional, but its appearance was inspired partly by the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon. Exterior images of that lodge were used to represent the hotel, while many interiors were created on studio sets in England.
Stanley Kubrick’s film, released in 1980, adapts Stephen King’s 1977 novel. The novel and film differ in details, including the hotel’s appearance and some events. The name Overlook Hotel remains central to both versions and is distinct from the real Timberline Lodge.
