Who died tragically young outside L.A.'s Viper Room club?

The story behind the answer

River Phoenix died tragically young outside The Viper Room in West Hollywood, California. The 23-year-old actor collapsed in the early hours of October 31, 1993, after suffering acute multiple-drug intoxication. He had been at the club with friends, family members, and his girlfriend Samantha Mathis, and was expected to perform with the band P.

Phoenix was already one of the most admired young actors of his generation. He had starred in films including Stand by Me, Running on Empty, My Own Private Idaho, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. His death shocked the film and music worlds and helped make The Viper Room a lasting symbol of 1990s Hollywood nightlife.

The Sunset Strip club was partly owned by actor Johnny Depp at the time. The question is sometimes phrased as though Phoenix died inside the venue, but he collapsed outside on the sidewalk after leaving the club. His final completed film, My Own Private Idaho, had been released two years earlier; Dark Blood remained unfinished when he died.
