Who did Serena Williams beat in the 1999 US Open women's singles final?

The story behind the answer

Serena Williams beat Martina Hingis in the 1999 US Open women's singles final.

The final was played on September 11, 1999, at the USTA National Tennis Center in New York. Williams won 6–3, 7–6 (7–4), defeating Hingis, who was the world No. 1 seed and one of the leading players of the era.

The victory gave Serena her first Grand Slam singles title, at age 17 and in only her second full year on the professional tour. She had reached the final by defeating Kim Clijsters, Conchita Martínez, Monica Seles, and defending champion Lindsay Davenport in consecutive rounds.

The result is sometimes confused with Serena's other 1999 matches. She lost to Martina Hingis in the Italian Open earlier that year, while the Williams sisters defeated Hingis and Anna Kournikova in the French Open doubles final. In New York, however, Serena defeated Hingis in singles.
