Harmony Tan defeated Serena Williams in the first round of the 2022 Wimbledon women's singles tournament. Tan won 7–5, 1–6, 7–6(10–7) in a match lasting more than three hours.
The match marked Williams's return to Wimbledon singles after a year away from competitive singles tennis. She received a wild card and began strongly, but Tan recovered after losing the second set and held her nerve in the deciding match tiebreak.
Tan was a 24-year-old French player ranked outside the world's top 100 and was making her Wimbledon main-draw debut. Her victory became one of the tournament's most memorable upsets because Williams had won seven Wimbledon singles titles and was a 23-time major champion.
A common mix-up is confusing Tan with Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who defeated Williams by retirement in the first round of the 2021 Wimbledon tournament. Tan's 2022 win was a completed match and ended Williams's comeback at the event.
