What was Serena Williams's seeding at the 2007 Australian Open?

The story behind the answer

Serena Williams was unseeded at the 2007 Australian Open.

Williams entered the Melbourne tournament ranked No. 81, below the cutoff for the 32-player women's singles seeding list. She had played only four tournaments in 2006 after knee problems and was widely questioned because of her fitness and limited preparation.

Despite that status, Williams defeated top-ranked Maria Sharapova in the final, 6–1, 6–2, to win her third Australian Open title. She became the first unseeded woman to win the Australian Open in the Open Era since Australia's Chris O'Neil in 1978.

The result also produced one of the most dramatic ranking contrasts in Grand Slam history: an unseeded champion defeated the tournament's No. 1 seed. Williams's victory lifted her to No. 14 and restored her place among the sport's elite.
