Who designed the physical Golden Arches for McDonald’s first restaurant featuring them?
Answer
Stanley Clark Meston
Answer
Stanley Clark Meston
Architect Stanley Clark Meston designed the physical Golden Arches for McDonald’s first restaurant featuring them.
Meston worked with artist Charles Fish on the design of the McDonald brothers’ new restaurant in Downey, California. The building used two large yellow arches on opposite sides of the structure, making the restaurant visible from the road.
The arches were initially architectural elements rather than a fully developed corporate logo. Their strong roadside appearance helped them become associated with McDonald’s, and the company later incorporated the shape into its national visual identity.
Jim Schindler is often confused with Meston because Schindler later created the recognizable overlapping-arches logo used in corporate branding. Meston’s contribution was the building design; Schindler’s was the later graphic transformation of the arches.
