Who designed the original McDonald's Speedee service-system mascot?

The story behind the answer

Richard and Maurice McDonald designed the original Speedee service-system mascot.

Speedee was a smiling chef character used to represent the McDonald brothers' fast, simplified restaurant system. The brothers developed that system at their San Bernardino, California, restaurant after reorganizing operations around a limited menu, assembly-line preparation, and quick service. The character's name emphasized speed, which was central to the restaurant's early identity.

Speedee is often confused with later McDonald's mascots and with the Golden Arches designers. Ray Kroc was responsible for expanding McDonald's through franchising, while Stanley Meston designed the restaurant's original architectural arches. Speedee belonged to the McDonald brothers' earlier branding period and was eventually displaced in public-facing advertising by Ronald McDonald.
