Who designed the original McDonald’s character lineup for the McDonaldland advertising campaign?

The story behind the answer

Needham Harper Steers designed the original McDonaldland character lineup for McDonald’s advertising.

The advertising agency created a fantasy setting populated by recurring figures, including Mayor McCheese, the Hamburglar, Captain Crook, Grimace, and the Fry Kids. This approach gave McDonald’s a shared cast and a recognizable fictional world for television commercials and promotional materials.

McDonaldland was inspired in part by the visual language of children’s entertainment, but its characters were connected directly to menu products and restaurant experiences. That made the campaign both imaginative and commercially focused.

The agency name is sometimes confused with Leo Burnett, another major advertising firm strongly associated with McDonald’s campaigns and Ronald McDonald. The two agencies played different roles in the company’s advertising history.
