Jim Schindler designed the modern McDonald’s logo in 1962, transforming the restaurant’s architectural arches into a stylized “M.”
The arches had originally been physical features of McDonald’s restaurant buildings. When the company developed a unified visual identity, Schindler combined the two arches into the recognizable golden emblem. This helped turn an architectural detail into a corporate mark that could appear on signs, packaging, advertisements, and uniforms.
The logo is often confused with the original restaurant arches designed by architect Stanley Clark Meston. Meston created the building design, while Schindler created the later graphic treatment that joined the arches visually. The logo’s shape also resembles the first letter of McDonald’s, making it effective even without accompanying text.
The Golden Arches later became one of the world’s most recognizable commercial symbols. Although the logo has appeared in different layouts and color combinations, its central golden “M” has remained the key element of McDonald’s branding.
