Who designed the Masters Par 3 Course with Clifford Roberts?

The story behind the answer

George Cobb designed the Masters Par 3 Course with Augusta National co-founder Clifford Roberts.

The nine-hole course was created in 1958 on the northeastern part of the Augusta National grounds and opened in 1959. Cobb was a golf-course architect and landscape designer who worked as a design consultant at Augusta National and developed a close relationship with Roberts and Bobby Jones.

The course measures about 1,060 yards and plays to par 27. Its short holes were intended to provide a compact, strategic layout rather than a miniature version of the championship course. The annual Par 3 Contest began in 1960, before the tournament proper.

The contest has become a relaxed Masters-week tradition, with players often inviting family members to caddie. It also has a famous “jinx”: through the contest’s history, no Par 3 Contest winner has gone on to win the Masters in the same week. Robert Trent Jones, Pete Dye and Tom Fazio are prominent architects, but they did not design this Augusta National course.
