Which golfer won the 1954 Masters in a playoff over Ben Hogan?
Answer
Sam Snead
Answer
Sam Snead
Sam Snead won the 1954 Masters in an 18-hole playoff over defending champion Ben Hogan.
Snead and Hogan both finished the regulation tournament at 289, one over par, forcing the Monday playoff at Augusta National. Snead shot 70, two under par, to Hogan’s 71 and won by one stroke. It was Snead’s third Masters title and his seventh, ultimately final, major championship.
The result was especially notable because the two 41-year-olds had won the previous three Masters between them. Snead won in 1952, while Hogan captured the green jacket in 1951 and 1953. Hogan entered the 1954 final round with a three-stroke lead but carded a 75, allowing Snead to catch him.
Snead’s winning total of 289 remains one of the highest scores ever recorded by a Masters champion. The 1954 tournament also featured amateur Billy Joe Patton, who led after two rounds and remained in contention until late mistakes left him one stroke out of the playoff.
